Ubuntu freezes when I try to log in

Ubuntu freezes when I try to log in

today I installed Ubuntu 13.04 for the first time on my Windows 7 PC. When I start the PC, everything seems to work fine until I try to log in, then it freezes. When I choose the recovery mode in the beginning everything works, so I guess the issue is with the graphic card driver because the only noticeable difference is the low graphics. I downloaded a driver (8800 GTS) from the Nvidia website but I can't install it. Please help me, how can I fix this? I'm completely new to Linux, so I'm totally clueless. I'd really appreciate any kind of help.
Thanks.
