Lenovo x220 Docking station display setting issue

Lenovo x220 Docking station display setting issue

I'm currently running 12.04 LTS on my Lenovo x220 i7. Its works really well, however there seems to be a problem with the screen resolution when on the dock.
At first I was using the laptop with an external screen connected via the VGA port on the side of the laptop. I have it set up as a mirror with the laptop screen shut down. And the aspect ratio / resolutions was 16.9 and had a great picture.
I then decided to get a dock which has a VGA port on it as well as 2 x DVI connectors that can run 2 screens via the dock.
This is the dock.
I have the dock (Lenovo serious 3) connected to my screen via the VGA cable. My external screen is a 19” acer 16:9 resolution. However what ever settings I have in the Ubuntu settings. The laptop switched to a 4:3 and then stretches the image to fit 16:9. This is no good!
In my mind everything is pointing to the graphics driver. I think Ubuntu has all of this built in, but should I be doing manual updates too? The details of the system tell me the graphics are as follows Intel® Sandy Bridge Mobile.
