Sexy costumes are taking a turn for the scary this Halloween, as Halloween enthusiasts seek out zombies, grim reapers and ?The Scream? character, according to State Fair Halloween Superstore, a retailer specializing in costumes, accessories and decorations in Belleville, N.J.
?Zombie costumes are stomping into vampire territory, as shows like The Walking Dead become the latest ?scary cool,?? said Michele Tartaglione, Managing Director of State Fair Halloween Superstore. ?Maybe it?s the dire economy or the depressing weather, but consumers are definitely gravitating toward the macabre this year.?
According to Tartaglione, the difference between man-scary and woman-scary is that while men want gruesome, women often want a sexy version of a ghoul. ?A sexy zombie, for instance, is all about the makeup. Take a Marilyn Monroe or a sexy nurse costume, add some dark circles ? maybe even a prosthetic ? and you?ve got a new twist on past years? favorites.?
State Fair also says that Smurf costumes are good sellers, driven by the new movie, The Smurfs. Each year, popular movies tend to predict what the big Halloween costumes will be, added Tartaglione.
Other costume trends are holding steady: These include superheroes of all types and toy weapons for little boys, and fairy costumes for little girls; although little girls have been trending toward sweet gothic costumes such as Skeleton Sweetie or Monster High?s Claudeen Wolf, Draculaura and Frankie Stein. Young women, meanwhile, want sexy, regardless of costume choice ? as evidenced by robust demand this year for corsets and stockings. Mothers of teenage girls can rest easy; teen costumes are toned down versions of the racier ones for grown women.
