Research conducted in the months of June and July shows that British holidaymakers? longstanding love affair with the Canary Islands continues. In a study of the ten most visited island destinations this summer, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote take up the first, third and ninth spots respectively in the results ? despite poor tourism numbers in 2008 due to the recession. In the first six months of 2010 sales of Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria holidays have all increased by 11.36%, 5% and 15% respectively based on the same period of last year.
Conducted by Trivago, the research was compiled based on the number of hotel bookings in the months of June and July. The results found Tenerife in the top spot, followed by Cyprus, Majorca, Gran Canaria, Jersey, Madeira, Key West, Hawaii?s O?aha, Lanzarote, and finally crete.
?Tenerife is officially Spain?s busiest resort, and has long been the number one destination for British holidaymakers - since the early days of the package holiday,? says Luke Nathan of travel consultants Travelsoon.com. ?That said, this research throws up some interesting results, with the likes of O?ahu, Hawaii ranking over traditional British favourites like Crete. It will be interesting to see if these trends hold over the season.?
According to passenger data for Q1 2001, airlines have seen demand for flights to the Spanish-held Canary Islands up 9% on last year, while hotel occupancy rates across the individual islands are recovering to pre-recession levels, with Lanzarote showing the biggest increase, up 6% on 2009 to 64%.
?Historically, Lanzarote has always been less popular than its larger siblings Tenerife and Gran Canaria,? continues Nathan. ?So it?s something of a surprise that this study sees it sitting next to destinations like Hawaii and the Florida keys. Then again, we?ve been seeing a steady influx in the number of cheap holidays to Lanzarote travel brokers are putting on the books for the past few years, likely in reaction to the island?s poor tourism numbers in 2007 and 2008.?
